AllCell Technologies has invented a new preventative thermal runaway propagation technique for lithium batteries…
The new technology allows for thermal management in electrochemical devices even when the product is not switched on. This is highly beneficial when products could be used outside in high temperatures, such as the use of lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes, which may be left outside in the sun. The new PCM has a protective effect on the battery by preventing it from overheating and therefore dramatically extending its life.
The prevention of thermal runaway propagation is a vital step toward improved safety in Li-ion battery technology. AllCell’s advanced proprietary composite material is also composed of various PCMs that extend lithium-ion cycle life.
Electric vehicle battery safety has been under close scrutiny in recent months after incidents leading to recalls of several models of electric cars. AllCell Technology specifically points to smaller electric vehicles, including e-bikes, where manufacturers may struggle to manage the thermal demands of the energy-dense lithium-ion batteries with high discharge rates. The company’s new technology could be particularly beneficial to safety improvements, and in turn, the reputation and consumer uptake of these types of vehicles.
AllCell will be on hand to describe the benefits of its new technology and other innovative products during The Battery Show, taking place November 13-15 in Detroit, Michigan.
