Fraunhofer CLT (Plymouth, MI) develops cost effective, laser-based manufacturing of thermal and electrical batteries. Efforts are focused on high speed welding of thin gauge stainless steel and  aluminium for cell packaging and the joining of dissimilar materials such as copper and aluminium for busbar, tab and terminal applications. CLT has comprehensive expertise in high speed cutting of electrodes for cylindrical and prismatic cells. Cutting processes with speeds up to 5m/s is established for a broad range of materials and is qualified for production. Other applications include local coating removal and high rate foil texturing and perforation.
