Axeon, manufacturer of battery systems, has developed a new lithium-ion battery that would give electric vehicles a 35% improvement in range compared with existing technologies. This was achieved without adding weight to the battery, and would help to overcome the “range anxiety” that studies have shown is one of the major barriers to the wider uptake of electric vehicles.
Axeon, along with partners Ricardo and Allied Vehicles have deployed the technology into an advanced demonstrator, which proved the device not only improves range, but also offers a better driver experience due to better weight distribution, and provides more power which improves drivability. They are now in active discussions about how to commercialise this new technology.
The £1.3 million project has been co-funded by the UK Technology Strategy Board, which awarded the consortium £680,000 to develop a high density battery system for emission-free vehicles.
The move follows news last week that European car makers have agreed on standardised charging specifications that should make it possible for different electric cars to recharge in different countries from 2017.
